DEXIA to recognize forty seven farmers

Share Share DEXIA in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture will be hosting a graduation ceremony for forty seven (47) farmers who will be recognized for their dedication and for successfully completing the Cocoa Farmer Field School Training programme. This was part of a Centre for Development Enterprise (CDE) Project in partnership with DEXIA to re-stimulate interest in Dominica’s cocoa industry. CDE is an EU funded project and this cocoa programme entitled “Caribbean Fine Flavour Cocoa Industry Commercialization” comprises 5 components. Component 1 is termed Improvement of productivity and raw material quality in the Caribbean area. CDE Cocoa Initiative programme works with seven (7) countries in the region and aims to provide technical assistance and enhance competitiveness among producers.The Farmer Field School commenced in March 2012 and ended in May 2012. Prior to Farmer Field School training, focus group meetings were held at Marigot, Salybia and Castle Bruce. The topics covered in the Farmer Field School were pruning, rehabilitation, Black Pod control and seedling production/nursery management. An expert farmer and coordinator were trained in Trinidad and Tobago in November 2011 and a harmonised module was developed.
