first_imgEditor’s Note: Blue Ridge Outdoors contributor Chris Gallaway was thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail and contributing a blog to BRO when tragedy struck his family. This is his final dispatch. Read his other dispatches from the trail: A Cold Start, Trail Magic, Difficult Winter, Monuments, Spring!, Family, and Virginia is for Limpers. The news from my hike is rather difficult. On my third day into Maine my parents called to tell me that my little brother Zach had died in a motorcycle accident. I traveled home from Rangeley, Maine and have been with my family since the 4th. We are stretched between grief, the unreality of this situation, and the simple business of all that must be done in this time. We are holding a memorial service for Zach this Saturday in Birmingham, and at the moment we’re trying to plan and prepare for that.I do plan to resume and finish my hike. It will be challenging to figure out how this life change fits with the journey I was on, but I hope that the trail will provide time and space for me to process this grief and to remember Zach. I’ll be flying back to Maine next Monday with about 200 miles left on the trail. My fiance, Sunshine, will join me in the town of Caratunk and we will finish the final week of walking together.last_img read more

Mothers can’t go to work because all of a sudden they have to stay home and watch their child, and fathers,” he said.Trump, who has been reluctant to embrace mandatory face masks ordered by many US governors to control the spread of COVID-19, also told CBS Americans should wear them “if necessary.”Against the backdrop of rising cases and deaths, US school districts have been confronted with a difficult choice of resuming classes or using only online teaching, which many parents have called ineffective and burdensome.School districts refusing to send children back to class in the fall, like those in California, are at odds with Trump, who has said he may withhold federal funds or remove tax-exempt status from schools that don’t open. It is not clear how funds could be withheld. Most primary and secondary school funding is local. The nation’s 98,000 public schools are a cornerstone of the economy, providing childcare for working parents, employing 8 million workers prior to the pandemic, and preparing some 50 million students to join the US workforce.Florida, New York allow return to schoolBoth Florida and New York state have said students will be allowed to return to school. New York is one of a handful of states where cases continue to fall and positive test rates are low – although it has seen by far the greatest number of deaths overall, at more than 32,000.North Carolina’s governor on Tuesday ordered schools to reopen if safety measures can be met, but said districts can opt for online learning only. The president’s comments came as Alabama, Florida and North Carolina on Tuesday reported record daily increases in deaths from COVID-19, marking grim new milestones of a second wave of infections surging across much of the United States.Florida, which has become an epicenter of the new outbreak, reported 133 new COVID-19 fatalities on Tuesday, raising its death toll to more than 4,500.”We must all continue to do our part to protect Florida’s most vulnerable and avoid the 3 Cs: closed spaces, crowded places and close-contact settings,” Governor Ron DeSantis wrote on Twitter. “Safeguarding the elderly and those with underlying health conditions will continue to be our top priority.”Mandi Hawke, who runs a small children’s book company from her home in Broward County near Fort Lauderdale, said she recently made her first trip to the local mall in months and was “horrified” by what she saw.”As bad as things are in south Florida, I feel they’re only going to get worse. We are not getting a grip on this,” said Hawke, 38.Alabama reported a record spike of 40 deaths on Tuesday and North Carolina an increase of 35, bringing each state’s total to over 1,100.Texas and California both reported record one-day increases in new cases. California said it had established a new mark for the current number of hospitalized patients suffering from COVID-19 at 2,103.US Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday visited Louisiana, which reported nearly 13,000 new cases last week. The state’s attorney general, Jeff Landry, canceled a meeting with Pence after testing positive for the coronavirus. Landry said he had no symptoms and was taking medication prescribed by his doctor. Topics :center_img President Donald Trump on Tuesday lambasted California’s two largest school districts for making students learn from home for the upcoming term in the face of the resurgent coronavirus pandemic. The Republican president, in an interview with CBS News, said it was a mistake for the Los Angeles and San Diego school districts to provide only on-line education for the academic year beginning in August.”I would tell parents and teachers that you should find yourself a new person, whoever’s in charge of that decision, because it’s a terrible decision,” Trump said.last_img read more

first_imgA pigeon smuggling cocaine and cannabis into a prison in Costa Rica has been caught by guards. The bird was seen landing in the central concourse of the medium security La Reforma jail, in San Rafael de Alajuela, where it was taken into custody. The drugs were contained in a small zipped up pouch strapped to the animals chest. The guards spotted the bird on Tuesday afternoon as it flew towards an open area of the medium security La Reforma prison. Prison director Paul Bertozzi said: ‘They observed the bulge on the animal so they captured it and confirmed that it carried a bag with zipper – and the drugs were inside… It seems the dove was trained for it.’The pigeon was examined by experts at the ZooAve Animal Rescue Centre who said the bag it was carrying caused some damage to its digestive system.A mugshot of the bird, caught by security officers and taken into custody, was released by Costa Rica’s Department of Justice and Peace as a warning to be vigilant for Narcopalomas. Narcopalomas, loosely translated as ‘drugs doves’, have been used by prisoners and their accomplices in the past– similar birds have been caught in prisons in Colombia, Argentina and even Bosnia.Mr Bertozzi said the pigeon was “nothing new” and that drug traffickers were using “unimaginable ways to achieve their macabre atrocities”.last_img read more

first_img England international Gemma Clews has launched her season by completing a hat trick of wins in the Delamere Comboy Scratch Trophy. The competition is special to Clews because it’s played at her home course, Delamere Forest, Cheshire, and because it remembers Carol Comboy, who was a member of the club for 55 years, an outstanding county player, a Curtis Cup captain and president of the former English Ladies’ Golf Association, the LGU and of Cheshire. “I definitely like to win this one,” said the 21-year-old. “It means a lot because it’s at Delamere and because Carol did so much for golf.” So far, Clews’s name is the only one on the trophy, having won it since the inaugural event in 2013. That year, she shot five-under in the first round but still had to end her second round birdie, eagle, to win on countback. Last year, she won by a stroke when bad weather reduced the competition to 18 holes. This year, she had to see off a challenge from fellow international Hollie Muse (West Lancashire) but she kept her firm grip on the trophy with a 36-hole score of two-under par – and a three shot winning margin. Once again, the weather was challenging. “It was really tough, it was very windy then we had hail and rain – and a stop for thunder and lightning. The weather really tried to do us again, but we managed to get finished,” said Clews. Both she and Muse were tied with level par scores of 73 after the morning round and they both staged a charge in the afternoon round, with Clews reaching the 11th tee in five-under and Muse in one-under.  Clews had six birdies in the first 10 holes but her run came to an end on the 11th where her ball plugged in a bunker. She bogeyed three consecutive holes, before getting back on track and returning a second round score of two-under 71. Muse’s challenge faded on the 15th where she had a double bogey but she came back well to finish with a birdie. Third place was taken by 15-year-old Ebonie Lewis (Bristol & Clifton) from England Golf’s South West regional U16 girls’ squad. She had scores of 74, 76.
