Opinion: Why The New Case Numbers Will Mislead You

first_imgBy Stephen Diener                                                                                                                   July 12th, 2020If you’re only paying attention to the new daily case count of coronavirus positives, than you are sadly not getting the entire story. The headline that grabbed everyone’s attention earlier today reported a one day record of 15,300 new cases of Covid-19 in the state of Florida. And to make matters more panic inducing, that number was not only a state record, but it was a record high number for any state in the country since the pandemic began. But that was it, that’s where the story began and ended. The headline was fed to you and the fear set in.Is it unsettling to see over 15,000 new cases of coronavirus? Yes, of course it is. No matter how it’s spun, it’s still over 15,000 positives. But, the fact of the matter is, that number is only one piece of the pie and without the rest, you simply are not getting the whole picture. Here’s some of the very important information that most likely was not reported to you in the news. This is your warning, there’s about to be a lot of numbers thrown your way, but they are important numbers, so stick with me.For one, those 15,300 cases we spoke about earlier were indeed a new one day record, but what was not told to you in that salacious headline was that those positives resulted from the 142,981 tests done in one day. That was a new state record by almost 50,000 tests, beating the old record of 95,335 reported on July 9th.Think about that for a second, let’s round that number up to 143,000, and realize that when you do the math of 15,300 positive results, that nets you with an 11.25 positivity rate. And then realize that just so happens to be the lowest rate of positives in over two weeks. Also take into account something else that doesn’t get talked about in these scary headlines that they like to pass off as news. And that is the recovery rate.Yes, we have lost way too many to this hellacious virus, but the fact of the matter is the recovery rate is at least over 98%. That is not me trying to “down play the virus,’ that is a statistical fact. And lastly, one more thing to remember during these very uncertain times, the “new” cases that get reported everyday are not exactly new.It is a little known fact that when new cases are counted for the daily report, the results of those who have already received a prior positive test are added in to the new cases if they test positive once again.Keep in mind, anyone who tests positive must always get retested until the result comes back negative before they can return to their daily normal lives. That means that there are thousands of people out there who are getting retested. And what happens when they come back with a positive result for the second or even third time?Yep, you guessed it. They get added into the “new” case count. So, you can see now how important it is to be given all of the information instead of just one number in a headline. And that’s what we’re here for.last_img read more

first_imgSACRAMENTO – Democratic gubernatorial contenders Phil Angelides and Steve Westly were locked in a tight battle for votes into the early morning today, as Angelides declared victory and Westly declined to concede the hard-fought race. “Our lead continues to grow and I’m confident that I’ll be hitting the road first thing (this) morning as the Democratic nominee for governor of the state of California,” Angelides, the state treasurer, told supporters in Sacramento shortly after 12:30 a.m. As Angelides spoke, Westly’s campaign had closed up its election night party, with the controller saying the race seemed too close to call. “We’ve run a terrific campaign and we’re going to be running a good campaign for another day or two, it looks like,” Westly told his supporters in downtown Los Angeles. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORE11 theater productions to see in Southern California this week, Dec. 27-Jan. 2He added that many of the counties that he felt would vote his way had yet to be counted, and noted that in his successful race for controller four years ago he was down by five points by the same time on election night. Tuesday’s low-turnout primary followed a contentious and expensive campaign During the campaign, Angelides emerged as the favorite of liberal party insiders, with his pledges to raise taxes on the wealthy and increase education spending. Westly reached deep into his own pockets for an expensive campaign that portrayed himself as a centrist outsider who could do a better job of managing the state than Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mud-slinging dominated the campaign’s closing weeks, which likely turned off voters and helped account for the low turnout. Political analysts said the low turnout helped Angelides, who drew support from the hard-core party activists and union members who are most dedicated to campaigning and voting. “Phil Angelides benefited from 30 years of working in the Democratic vineyards,” said Tim Hodson, executive director of the Center for California Studies at California State University, Sacramento. “In a low-turnout election, the candidate with the best ground operation, the best get-out-the-vote operation benefits.” Angelides was leading by three to four points in the early returns, but significant numbers had yet to be counted, with several counties reporting delays. Both candidates took the stage at their election night parties shortly after 11 p.m. to thank supporters and warn them about what could be a long night, or a full day or more before the results are certain. The vote followed a campaign in which the two candidates and their supporters spent more than $70 million, including almost $33 million out of Controller Westly’s own pockets. In the closing weeks of the race, the ads turned nasty, with Westly accusing Angelides of polluting the environment when he was a developer and Angelides attacking the controller over the source of some of his campaign contributions and at one time being an ally of Schwarzenegger. The negative tone and the similarities of the two Democrats led to record numbers of undecided voters in the days before the vote, and a potentially record low voter turnout Tuesday. The past record for low turnout in a gubernatorial primary was 34.6 percent in 2002. While Secretary of State Bruce McPherson had predicted this year’s turnout at 38 percent, the Field Poll projected it could go as low as 34 percent. Voter turnout in Los Angeles County was 34.3 percent, the second-lowest turnout in the past eight years since 25.9 percent in 2002. Political experts attributed the low turnout to several factors, including the lack of a competitive Republican gubernatorial primary, only two measures on the ballot, the high number of undecided voters, the negative tone of the campaign, voter fatigue from facing seven statewide elections in the last four years and the similarities of the two Democratic candidates. “Part of the reason is these candidates do not excite, do not energize,” said political analyst Sherry Bebitch Jeffe of the University of Southern California. “Their message, if you can find it, doesn’t appear to be resonating with many voters. There is a charisma deficit.” As turnout figures trickled in, there were sporadic reports of polling and counting problems in various counties, in part due to new federal requirements for voting technology. In Alameda County, for example, which has about 5.7 percent of the state’s Democrats, some 4,000 touch-screen voting machines failed to meet federal and state standards, meaning results were delayed because of a shortage of optical scanners to read the ballots. The lack of voter enthusiasm was reflected at polling locations throughout the state Tuesday. Volunteers at the Pierce College poll in Woodland Hills passed the time by eating and reading – and mostly waiting for voters to show up. “I thought it was going to be busier, lines out the door,” said poll worker Michael Brook, 18. “Nobody has ever had to wait.” They said turnout was light, with a mere 56 people – mostly older citizens – voting as of 6 p.m. “This is really low,” said Ellen Trumpeler, on-site election inspector, adding that she was hoping for a last-minute rush before the polls closed. “I was thinking around 150 people would show up. This is about one-third what I anticipated.” Ziv Kozaski, 43, of Woodland Hills was among the few to stop by his voting precinct Tuesday night. He was joined by his wife, Shelly. “It’s my patriotic duty,” he said minutes after casting his vote. “Some people just don’t care. I don’t know why. There should be no reason not to vote.” At The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in Woodland Hills, Candice Moore, 25, said she didn’t feel compelled to vote. “I’ve given up on the process,” she said. Meanwhile, Schwarzenegger is wasting no time preparing for the fall campaign. He is embarking on a multi-day bus tour of the state this week, starting with four stops in Northern California today. Those include talking to restaurant patrons in Chico and Samoa, chatting with players and fans at a ballpark in Auburn and hosting a town hall meeting in Redding. During the governor’s “Protecting the California Dream tour” he is expected to focus on his own record and his goals for a second term rather than start off attacking his Democratic opponent right away. He will talk about creating almost 600,000 new jobs, reducing workers’ compensation rates and working with Democrats in the Legislature to get an infrastructure bond package on the November ballot. “I’m really enthusiastically looking forward to this campaign, and the reason is because we have a great record to compare with anyone else,” Schwarzenegger said Tuesday during his Cabinet meeting. “I think that we have really moved the state forward, and we are very well on our way to bringing the state back to where it ought to be.” Angelides and Westly were actually two of eight Democratic candidates for the gubernatorial nomination. Similarly, on the Republican side, Schwarzenegger faced three challengers, but none were seen as serious challenges. Staff Writer Angie Valencia-Martinez contributed to this report. first_imgTags:#start#startups A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… With large daily newspapers filing for bankruptcy left and right, it is no secret that the journalism industry is going through a severe period of change. Old business models focused on advertising and classifieds have been eroded by more target online ads and by the rise of sites like Craigslist. This era of journalism renaissance has ushered in several non-profit startup news organizations, like ProPublica, an investigative journalism organization, and Spot.us, a site which fosters “community funded reporting”. One site, however, the Center for Independent Media (CIM), a non-profit online journalism network, has taken a different approach to the non-profit journalism model, one which has helped them raise $11.5 million in just four years. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts chris cameron 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Founded in 2006, The CIM has created a network of six sites in Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico and Washington D.C. Their seventh site, The Florida Independent, is set to launch soon thanks to a recent grant of $352,000 from the Knight Foundation. The network’s CEO David S. Bennahum says that diversifying into several branches creates fundraising flexibility. With more sites comes more discussions, and more opportunities to raise money. Bennahum explained this strategy in a recent interview with Laura McGann of Harvard’s Nieman Journalism Lab, a former employee of his. “From a financial standpoint, we’re able to do things at a lower cost than other nonprofits, so foundation support we receive goes further, more of it goes to journalism, less of it goes to overhead as a percentage. This is a clear distinction between ourselves and all the other nonprofits, the fixed costs with operating a news organization are distributed across the network… In 2008, we spent tens of thousands of dollars at the time on a redesign, but it was distributed across six sites,” said Bennahum.Bennahum believes there are two roles for non-profit news organizations – as wholesalers and as retailers. ProPublica, he says, is a wholesaler, creating stories which they can turn around and sell to larger papers. CIM, on the other hand, is a retailer, speaking “directly to the customer,” he says. This distinction has helped CIM to grow their audience, something Bennahum believes non-profits need to improve on.“I think too many non-profit news organizations are insufficiently focused on whether anyone is reading their sites,” says Bennahum. “I think it’s a problem if you have raised money and ultimately at the end of the month, 15,000 people came to your site.”last_img read more

first_imgManisha Malhotra, CEO, Mittal Champions TrustThere are sports, and then there are pressure cooker sports.Precision sports fall in the second category. In these events, it doesn’t matter what you have done in your life; you need to shine in the two-hour window at the Olympics. These are the sports where we see the most upsets.India’s archers, one of whom was number one in the world, are the prime examples. Both the men’s and women’s teams were also ranked in the top-three.But the archers turned out to be a big disappointment. It was tough to watch them fail, but the fact that they failed so miserably was heartbreaking. How can the world number one not even put up a contest against the number 37 ranked archer? That is the beauty of sport- even the underdog can have his day. Unfortunately for us, this Olympics, we were not the underdogs. The way archery works is quite simple: there is a qualification round where the scores determine “seedings”, followed by a straight knock-out draw that pits the number one seed against the number 64, and so on.We didn’t fare very well in the qualification round, which didn’t put us in the driver seat, but we were not in that bad a position either. In the team events, the women drew Denmark, after which they would’ve played Korea. But they didn’t even show up! It’s hard to blame anyone, but the fact that we hardly even competed puzzled everyone. The men drew Japan- to play the USA- and failed to clear the first hurdle, although theirs was a closer contest.Individually, world number one Deepika Kumari shot the best out of all Indian archers and was seeded seventh, she was slated to play the 37th seed from Great Britain and it was not exactly a tough match.advertisementSo the million dollar question is: What happened? It doesn’t matter that they lost, but the way they lost is something even me, who has been watching them day in and day out, cannot believe. They were one of my favorites going into the Olympics, so I too am scratching my head.Everyone is saying it was the “pressure”, but really, both these teams have performed under pressure. They have been in the medals at the World Championships and four World Cups. So it’s not like they are basket cases. My theory is that we didn’t surround our athletes with a good enough team. The Archery Federation of India had insisted that this time they would go to the Olympics with their own coaches and support staff to help the team. But the truth is that when you have your life on the line, you need experience. We don’t have any home-grown coaches who know much about top-level competition, and so, there was no one for our athletes to fall back on.We need to alter the way we choose teams. Till now we have been choosing the best in country; now we need to choose people who may not be the best in India, but who can win internationally.I think India is a peculiar country where we have athletes who do so well at home, but cannot replicate the results internationally. It is now time to stop thinking about how to groom the best in India and work with international standard in mind.last_img read more

But while Tiger Woods has consumed all of the oxygen in the room, the game’s other 40-something blast from the past, Phil Mickelson, is quietly playing some of the best golf of his professional career. That Mickelson, at the well-seasoned age of 47, is entirely overlooked thanks to his enigmatic rival is almost too fitting; it’s been happening for two decades.“He’s always one-upped me in my career, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out this week and won,” Mickelson said of Woods earlier this month. “Just to one-up me again.”Lefty stands at No. 18 in the World Golf Rankings, where the average age of the players ahead of him is 30.7. He is No. 3 in the FedExCup standings, where the average age of the players ahead of him is 28. He has logged five top-10 finishes in eight starts this season; only 31-year-old Brian Harman, who has played in 10 events, has more.At the WGC-Mexico Championship in early March, Mickelson beat Justin Thomas — the No. 2 golfer in the world, who is young enough to be Mickelson’s son — in a playoff. It was Mickelson’s 43rd professional win and his first since taking the British Open at Muirfield in 2013.It was also a continuation of peak performance this season from the avid gamesman. Entering this week’s WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, Mickelson has finished no worse than tied for sixth at four consecutive tournaments. But performance obviously diminishes over time — especially at the highest level the sport has to offer. There’s a senior tour for a reason, after all.So how, then, is Mickelson turning back the clock this season as the old-timer in a sea of youths?“There’s a number of areas in my game that, if I look back 10, 15 years ago, I feel like I’m significantly better,” Mickelson said earlier this month on the Dan Patrick Show. “Certainly, I’ve gotten a ton better at putting.”This is very true. Only Jason Day (1.39) is averaging more strokes gained with the putter than Mickelson (1.08), who leads the tour in the percentage of holes with only one putt (48.8 percent), the average number of putts per round (27), the percentage of holes with a birdie or better (41.3 percent)2On holes in which the player hit the green in regulation. and overall putting average (1.5 putts per hole). While his work off the tee has been nothing special (-0.10 strokes gained), Mickelson has had little difficulty getting his ball in position to attack the flagstick, ranking third in strokes gained on shots approaching the green (1.14).And yet, Mickelson’s odds to win the Masters sit at 20-to-1, below those of Woods, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Jon Rahm, who have combined to produce eight top-10 finishes and two wins this season. Mickelson has nearly matched those marks by himself. Given his record of work and meteoric ascension this season, golf’s most notorious active gambler would perhaps do well to bet on himself.Mickelson has publicly said one of his goals is to qualify for a 12th Ryder Cup and to help the U.S. team win on foreign soil. His recent win gives him a great chance of accomplishing it. Another goal is to eclipse 50 career wins on tour.“I don’t know (when I’ll get to 50),” Mickelson told reporters after his latest win. “Seven more wins and I’ll be there. I don’t have the month or the time, but I will get there.” read more
