How many of the demonstrators have been killed? How many have been wounded? No one knows because journalists are being prevented from working. Foreign reporters cannot get visas to go there and local journalists are all being jailed or forced to remain silent.”Julliard added: “Defending freedom of information in Syria above all means defending the Syrian people’s right to know what is going on in their own country. The government must end this news blackout. Acts of violence are almost certainly taking place at this very moment in Syria but nothing is being reported because the media are banned from going there. This is unacceptable.”Reporters Without Borders hails the release of Khaled Sid Mohand, an Algerian journalist who had been detained in Syria. It shows that all the demonstrations on his behalf in France and Algeria paid off. Journalists nonetheless continue to be targeted in Syria, as they have been since the start of the wave of protests there. Arrests, physical attacks and deportations are all being used to ensure a complete news blackout. The crackdown is continuing. Yesterday, the Syrian writer and journalist Omar Koush was arrested on arrival at Damascus airport after participating in a conference in Turkey, while Al-Jazeera announced that it had lost contact with one of its journalists, Dorothy Parvaz (who has US, Canadian and Iranian citizenship), since her arrival in Damascus on 29 April. Al-Jazeera previously announced on 27 April that it was suspending all activities throughout Syria until further notice because of the many threats and acts of intimidation against its crews.Three other journalists are currently known to be held by the Syrian authorities. They are Fayez Sara, a Syrian journalist and writer who was arrested on 11 April; Mohamed Zaid Mistou, a Norwegian journalist of Syrian origin, who was arrested on 7 April; and Kamal Sheikhou, a Syrian blogger who was arrested on 15 March. At the same time, there has been no news of the journalists Akram Abu Safi and Sobhie Naeem Al-Assal since 24 March. As part of its actions marking World Press Freedom Day, Reporters Without Borders today released the 2011 version of its list of Press Freedom Predators, this one with 38 heads of state and warlords who sow terror in the media. The most important changes in this year’s list have been in North Africa and the Middle East, where dramatic and sometimes tragic events have taken place in recent months. first_imgiStock/Thinkstock(TOLEDO, Ohio) — The four Ohio teens who pleaded guilty to dropping a sandbag off a freeway overpass that killed a 22-year-old man were given a suspended sentence and ordered to a treatment center on Friday.Marquis Byrd was the passenger in a vehicle that was hit by the sandbag dropped onto Interstate 75 in Toledo last December. Byrd was left in critical condition and died three days later in the hospital. The four teens, all aged 13 or 14, pleaded guilty to either murder or manslaughter. The boy who dropped the sandbag pleaded guilty to murder while the other three pleaded to involuntary manslaughter, the Toledo Blade reported. The teen who pleaded guilty to murder was sentenced to the Department of Youth Services until he turns 21, while the teens who pleaded guilty to manslaughter were sentenced to three years in the Department of Youth Services. All four sentences were suspended by the judge in favor of being sent to Toledo’s Lucas County Youth Treatment Center.“It’s a treatment facility, for certain services, to provide so these boys change their behavior and can become productive members of our community,” Judge Denise Navarre Cubbon said. The decision to suspend the teens’ sentences and send them to the treatment facility drew outrage from Lillian Diallo, the Byrd family’s lawyer, who called the decision “outrageous.”“Suspended what? If you do what? So eight months you get to go home?” Diallo told Toledo ABC station WTVG outside the courtroom following the sentencing. “This child will never be at home. His son will never see him. His mother will never be able to say, ‘Hey son, how are you? How’s your day?’ Touch his face, see his face. This is outrageous.”There were 30 letters written on behalf of Byrd, asking for a strong punishment for the boys. The four convicted teens apologized in court to the victim’s family.“I pray for him and his family every single day and night and cannot imagine what they are going through and how they feel right now,” one of the boys said Friday, reading from a letter. The four teens initially pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder and vehicular vandalism, the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office said.“Let me tell you something — at the age of 10 you know if you take something and put it in a moving lane of traffic, you should know what the consequence will be,” Diallo said. “You didn’t take the sandbag and throw it on the side. You took that sandbag and you threw it down there to that boy’s death.”Diallo, who knew Byrd, told ABC News in January that Byrd, a father to a 2-year-old boy, was planning a surprise proposal for his girlfriend, the mother of his child.Copyright © 2018, ABC Radio. first_imgEngland FC – Shaping up for Euro 2020by Paul Vegas24 days agoSend to a friendShare the love- the following is a sponsored articleEngland has loads of exciting football action coming up with the Euro 2020 qualifiers around the corner!Gareth Southgate is leading the team through an important year of Euro 2020 qualifiers. Thanks to a string of positive results, the nation believes ‘it’s coming home’ once again. The Three Lions enjoyed great success in 2018. They outplayed almost all of their opponents and reached the World Cup semi-finals.England have made it four wins from four in the European Qualifiers so far. But has Gareth Southgate really identified his best team? The answer might be yes following their latest results. But he still needs to solve the selection dilemmas before next summer’s tournament. The coach has labelled England’s free-scoring frontline as one of the most exciting in world football. However, their struggles in defence lately have shown there are still questions to answer elsewhere in the side.Jordan Pickford undoubtedly has the number 1 spot in the team. With a wealth of full-back options, the centre-back remains a headache for the coach. Michael Keane and Harry Maguire were largely untroubled in England’s last game against Bulgaria. But Southgate will be concerned that Kosovo, a team that is not too strong, was able to cause them so many problems at St Mary’s.Kosovo scored the first goal due to Keane’s misplaced pass. As for Maguire, he was guilty for their third goal, kicking Vedat Muriqi in the box after he failed to clear the ball. The return of John Stones might give Southgate some reassurance about the backline. The Three Lions used the same midfield three against both Bulgaria and Kosovo. Ross Barkley, Jordan Henderson and Declan Rice started both games and proved that they are up for the task. But there are many debates over England’s best midfield.Rice is having a great season so far with West Ham. The player has shown similar promise in many of his early appearances for England. But he tends to lose many balls in build-up play. Southgate does not have many replacements for the holding role either. Harry Winks can possibly count himself unlucky not to have even made it off for the last two games. The passing ability of Harry Winks can give England the kind of control they so often lack against top flight teams. Barkley and Henderson’s places are also the subject of scrutiny, especially with creative players such as James Maddison and Mason Mount.England has an all-star attack! Yes, they really do! They are currently well-stocked in attack with talents, such as Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling. In the last two games, England were deadly in the final third. When Jadon Sancho came on to replace Rashford, he scored his first two international goals. Kane and Sterling’s places are surely guaranteed. But Sancho and Rashford have provided serious competition and make it hard for Southgate to make his team selection.Who would make your best England side for the opener at Euro 2020? first_imgThe 2015 NCAA Tournament Bracket. It was only a matter of time. After Ohio State lost to Arizona Saturday afternoon, there are officially no perfect brackets left in the world. ESPN’s lone user with a perfect bracket after the second round wound up nailing his first 38 games before dropping a contest. He gave an interview with the Worldwide Leader Saturday afternoon, and revealed that he had no rhyme or reason to the picks he made.11.57 million brackets were entered in ESPN’s Tournament Challenge. After Arizona’s win over Ohio State, ZERO perfect brackets remain.— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) March 21, 2015As we’ve noted before, there is no known person to have ever put together a perfect bracket in March Madness history. The odds, which are something in the neighborhood of 1 in 9 quintillion, suggest that it will never happen in our lifetime either. There’s always next year, right?last_img read more

ESPN was left with virtually no wiggle room. It had to discipline Rob Parker in some way for his misguided comments about Washington Redskins’ quarterback Robert Griffin III. And the network did, suspending him indefinitely.Meanwhile, Griffin practiced for the third straight day, sparking optimism that the dynamic rookie quarterback is recovering well from a mild knee sprain and could play Sunday in Cleveland against the Browns. The Redskins do not plan to make a decision on Griffin’s status until game time. The Redskins are in a battle for a playoff spot, making the outcome crucial. If the New York Giants lose to the 11-2 Atlanta Falcons and the Dallas Cowboys fall to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Redskins win, they would bolt first place in the NFC East. Be certain Griffin is aware of this, and would want to go.There is a chance the team would hold him out if it believed he would risk further injury.Speaking of injury, Parker hurt his career. ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said: “Following yesterday’s comments, Rob Parker has been suspended until further notice. We are conducting a full review.”In case you missed it, Parker, appearing on ESPN’s “First Take” on Thursday, was asked about Griffin’s role as a black quarterback. Parker proceeded to bury himself, questioning Griffin’s “blackness.” “Is he a brother or a cornball brother?” said Parker, who is black. “He’s black. . .But he’s not black. He’s not down with the cause.”He added: “We all know he has a white fiancée,” he said. “There was all this talk about he’s a Republican, which, there’s no information [about that] at all. I’m just trying to dig deeper as to why he has an issue. Because we did find out with Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods was like, I’ve got black skin, but don’t call me black. So people got to wondering about Tiger Woods early on.”Outrage ensued, particularly from the black community, which was offended that Parker would suggest an affable, engaging, humble athlete was not “black enough.”Robert Griffin II, the quarterback’s father, told USA Today Sports Thursday night : “I wouldn’t say it’s racism. I would just say some people put things out there about people so they can stir things up.”DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association, told The Washington Post in an email Friday: “Robert can certainly take care of himself. Nonetheless, I hope that our men and for that matter, my own kids, will never beg for authenticity from someone who can only talk about the things that other people have the courage to do. People need to be held accountable for the offensive things that they say.” read more

I feel in good shape and ready to go.”The Germany international took the opportunity to praise team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo for the impact he’s made both on and off the field at Juventus.Emre also hopes to win the Champions League alongside the Portuguese star after coming so close at Liverpool last season, where they lost 3-1 to Ronaldo’s Real Madrid at Kiev in the final.“Every footballer wants to play with Cristiano, he’s a big, big player and off the pitch he’s a great guy,” said Emre.Romelu Lukaku, Inter MilanLukaku backed to beat Ronaldo in Serie A scoring charts Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Former Inter Milan star Andy van der Meyde is confident Romelu Lukaku will outscore Cristiano Ronaldo in this season’s Serie A.“You can always talk to him, you can learn from him a lot and I think he gives a push to the team.”He added: “Last year, I lost the final but this year I want to win it, with him together of course.“I heard a lot of times this year when we played, they [fans] want to win the Champions League. I think the fans are really looking forward for it and really want to win it.“Of course everybody say you will win the Serie A but it’s very difficult and the last seven years Juventus won it, this year the eighth time and it’s not always easy, we have to train every day hard.”Emre, who has made 21 appearances for Juventus this season, will hope to help get the club back to winning ways at Sassuolo on Sunday in the Serie A.Massimiliano Allegri’s side are looking to bounce back following a 3-0 defeat to Atalanta in the Coppa Italia and a 3-3 draw against Parma last weekend.A busy 2 weeks ahead with 4 games! first_imgJust arrived in Calexico, California! pic.twitter.com/lTChNxsHj6— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 5, 2019 April 5, 2019 CALEXICO, Calif. (AP) — Declaring “our country is full,” President Donald Trump on Friday insisted the U.S. immigration system was overburdened and illegal crossings must be stopped as he inspected a refurbished section of fencing at the Mexican border.Trump, making a renewed push for border security as a central campaign issue for his 2020 re-election, participated in a briefing on immigration and border security in Calexico before viewing a 2-mile (3.2-kilometer) see-through steel-slat barrier that was a long-planned replacement for an older barrier — and not new wall.“There is indeed an emergency on our southern border,” Trump said at the briefing, adding that there has been a sharp uptick in illegal crossings. “It’s a colossal surge, and it’s overwhelming our immigration system. We can’t take you anymore. Our country is full.”As Air Force One touched down in the state, California and 19 other states that are suing Trump over his emergency declaration to build a border wall requested a court order to stop money from being diverted to fund the project. But Trump, who ratcheted up his hard-line immigration rhetoric in recent weeks, declared that his move, which included vetoing a congressional vote, was necessary. Also on Friday, House Democrats filed a lawsuit preventing Trump from spending more money than Congress has approved to erect barriers along the southwestern border. Congress approved just under $1.4 billion for work on border barricades. Trump has asserted he can use his powers as chief executive to transfer an additional $6.7 billion to wall construction.Trump, who earlier in the week threatened to shut down the border over the high numbers of migrants trying to enter the U.S., appeared to walk back his comments Thursday. He said Friday that it was because Mexico had gotten tougher in stopping an influx of immigrants from moving north.“Mexico has been absolutely terrific for the last four days,” the president said as he left the White House. “I never changed my mind at all. I may shut it down at some point.”The president’s visit came a day after he withdrew his nominee to lead U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Longtime border official Ron Vitiello appeared to be cruising toward confirmation, but Trump said Friday that he wanted to go in a “tougher direction.”Trump, as he so often does, mixed fact with fiction when warning of the threat at the border. When complaining about the Flores legal settlement that governs treatment of migrant children and families, he blamed “Judge Flores, whoever you may be.” But Flores was an unaccompanied 15-year-old girl from El Salvador. He also downplayed the claims of people seeking asylum at the border, declaring without evidence that many are gang members while comparing some of their efforts to find safety in the U.S. to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 elections.“It’s a scam, it’s a hoax,” Trump said. “I know about hoaxes. I just went through a hoax.”As the president showed off the renovated section of the barrier to reporters, a balloon depicting Trump as a baby floated further down the border. And as Trump landed in California, the state’s governor ripped the president’s push for Congress to pass legislation that would tighten asylum rules to make it harder for people to qualify. Within two years we will have close to 400 miles built or under construction & keeping our Country SAFE – not easy when the Dems are always fighting to stop you!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 5, 2019___Lemire reported from New York. Associated Press writers Jill Colvin and Alan Fram contributed to this report from Washington. During his visit to Calexico, President @realDonaldTrump told the media, “they want the wall in #SanDiego.” He pointed out the politicians don’t, but the people do.What do you think?More info: https://t.co/3zcUNYCiRU pic.twitter.com/pTOkA3eS3Y— KUSI News (@KUSINews) April 5, 2019“Since our founding, this country has been a place of refuge — a safe haven for people fleeing tyranny, oppression and violence. His words show a total disregard of the Constitution, our justice system, and what it means to be an American,” said Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.Trump has been increasingly exasperated at his inability to halt the swelling number of migrants entering the U.S., including thousands who have been released after arriving because border officials have no space for them. Arrests along the southern border have skyrocketed in recent months, and border agents were on track to make 100,000 arrests or denials of entry in March, a 12-year high. More than half of those are families with children, who require extra care. The southern border is nearly 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) long and already has about 650 miles (1,050 kilometers) of different types of barriers, including short vehicle barricades and tall steel fences that go up to 30 feet (9 meters) high. Most of the fencing was built during George W. Bush’s administration, and there have been updates and maintenance throughout other administrations.Trump has yet to complete any new mileage of fencing or other barriers anywhere on the border, though he declared Friday that at least 400 miles (650 kilometers) of the border barrier would be erected over the next two years. His administration so far has only replaced existing fencing. Construction for that small chunk of fencing cost about $18 million, began in February 2018 and was completed in October. Plans to replace that fence date back to 2009, during President Barack Obama’s tenure.Administration officials had been studying ways to minimize the economic impact of a potential border closure in case Trump went through with his threat, including keeping trucking lanes open or closing only certain ports. But even absent that extraordinary step, delays at border stations have been mounting after some 2,000 border officers were reassigned from checking vehicles to deal with migrant crowds. After the border visit, Trump was slated to travel to Los Angeles, where he was set to hold a pair of fundraisers in the deeply liberal city. He was then poised to travel to Las Vegas for another re-election fundraiser and an address to the Republican Jewish Coalition, which is backed by GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson.last_img read more
