Films

first_imgI never thought I’d have a heading for films on this blog. When I got to Belgium I visited the Ardennes, beautiful forest, nothing to do with films. When I got up this morning (afternoon in fact, as I am following the year abroad agenda to a q, minus partying), I was planning on an uneventful day. I went to the Mediatheque to get films and cds and books and then met the others from my radio show to put up posters (incidently, 2pm British time on www.48fm.com). I saw a poster for a Michael Winterbottom film and decided to go along with my friend Claire. We walked in to the projection room without noticing the film had moved room, but we persevered and a film came on. It was a series of experimental films where they’d reused old reels to make new ones. The quality was excellent, I thought, ” wow this has made my week worthwhile.” It doesn’t stop there. Claire and I decide to go for dinner and, having met in film class and just seen a bunch of eye-opening films, we began discussing films. I told her about the Belgian brothers who won the Palme D’or at Cannes a couple of years back with their particularly grimey film “L’Enfant”. She wrote the brothers’ name down in her notebook. We stepped outside and she noticed some filming going on across the street. We sat on a bench and watched until a woman came up to us and told us we were in the shot, she told us that it was precisely these Belgian brothers who were shooting a film in front of us. We moved to behind the camera and watched the monitors until a man came up to us and alsked us if we wanted to be in the film we happily accepted but gave up after the twelfth shot because of the cold, and we weren’t being paid. The Dardennes brothers. The Ardennes have more to do with films than you’d suppose.last_img read more

first_imgLondon, United Kingdom | AFP | Arsene Wenger celebrated the 21st anniversary of his arrival at Arsenal in winning style as the Gunners cruised to a 2-0 victory over Brighton on Sunday. There are many reasons for Arsenal fans to look back fondly on the day Wenger was hired but, after several years of underachievement, the Frenchman finds himself engaged in a fight to restore his tarnished reputation. It is too early to predict whether Arsenal can end their 13-year wait to win a fourth Premier League title under Wenger, but there were some encouraging signs as Brighton were put to the sword at the Emirates Stadium.Nacho Monreal opened the scoring in the first half before Alex Iwobi, converting Alexis Sanchez’s majestic assist, wrapped up the points after the interval.Arsenal’s sixth win from their last seven matches in all competitions moved them to within six points of leaders Manchester City heading into the international break.Fittingly, Wenger marked his milestone date with a notable record of his own.Brighton are the 45th different Premier League club to be defeated by Arsenal since Wenger took over in 1996, breaking the record he shared with Manchester United legend Alex Ferguson. Just 64 hours after winning at Belarus’s Bate Borisov in the Europa League on Thursday, Arsenal were back in action and Wenger freshened up his side by making nine changes.Wenger this week claimed Arsenal are a more unified team since the transfer window closed just after their humiliating 4-0 defeat at Liverpool. There was ample evidence to support that theory as his team tore into Brighton right from the start.Alexandre Lacazette almost gave them the perfect start after just 65 seconds when his fierce drive flashed past Albion goalkeeper Mat Ryan, only to cannon back off a post. Albion striker Tomer Hemed was serving the first of a three-game suspension, so Izzy Brown started up front and the youngster went close with a header from Pascal Gross’s free-kick.That effort aside, it was one way traffic as Wenger’s men left Brighton trailing in their wake time and again.– Irrepressible –Sanchez and Iwobi tested Ryan from long-range before Monreal gave Arsenal the lead in the 16th minute.Granit Xhaka’s free-kick to the far post was headed back by Lacazette and after Shkodran Mustafi had his shot cleared off the line, Monreal chested down and fired home from 10 yards. It was Monreal’s first league goal for Arsenal since March 2013 and the Spanish defender celebrated with a fist-pumping roar of delight.Solly March nearly silenced Arsenal’s cheers moments later when he unleashed a powerful 20-yard shot that crashed back off a post. The Gunners should have doubled their lead before half-time when Brighton defender Lewis Dunk slipped, putting Lacazette through on goal. But Lacazette let Brighton off the hook with a tame shot straight at Ryan, while Aaron Ramsey saw his low strike repelled by the Australian keeper following an incisive Arsenal counter. Those misses didn’t prove a source of regret as Sanchez produced a sublime contribution to set up Iwobi’s first goal since January in the 56th minute.Exchanging passes in a blur of movement, Ramsey and Lacazette worked the ball smoothly into Sanchez inside the penalty area.Faced with three Albion defenders, Sanchez knew a shot would be blocked, so he instinctively guided a back-heel towards the unmarked Iwobi, who had the simple task of firing home from eight yards.Sanchez was in irrepressible mood and it took a combined of Dunk and Ryan to keep out his goal-bound shot, before Sead Kolasinac’s header was cleared off the line by March.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

first_imgBy Stephen Diener                                                                                                                   July 12th, 2020If you’re only paying attention to the new daily case count of coronavirus positives, than you are sadly not getting the entire story. The headline that grabbed everyone’s attention earlier today reported a one day record of 15,300 new cases of Covid-19 in the state of Florida. And to make matters more panic inducing, that number was not only a state record, but it was a record high number for any state in the country since the pandemic began. But that was it, that’s where the story began and ended. The headline was fed to you and the fear set in.Is it unsettling to see over 15,000 new cases of coronavirus? Yes, of course it is. No matter how it’s spun, it’s still over 15,000 positives. But, the fact of the matter is, that number is only one piece of the pie and without the rest, you simply are not getting the whole picture. Here’s some of the very important information that most likely was not reported to you in the news. This is your warning, there’s about to be a lot of numbers thrown your way, but they are important numbers, so stick with me.For one, those 15,300 cases we spoke about earlier were indeed a new one day record, but what was not told to you in that salacious headline was that those positives resulted from the 142,981 tests done in one day. That was a new state record by almost 50,000 tests, beating the old record of 95,335 reported on July 9th.Think about that for a second, let’s round that number up to 143,000, and realize that when you do the math of 15,300 positive results, that nets you with an 11.25 positivity rate. And then realize that just so happens to be the lowest rate of positives in over two weeks. Also take into account something else that doesn’t get talked about in these scary headlines that they like to pass off as news. And that is the recovery rate.Yes, we have lost way too many to this hellacious virus, but the fact of the matter is the recovery rate is at least over 98%. That is not me trying to “down play the virus,’ that is a statistical fact. And lastly, one more thing to remember during these very uncertain times, the “new” cases that get reported everyday are not exactly new.It is a little known fact that when new cases are counted for the daily report, the results of those who have already received a prior positive test are added in to the new cases if they test positive once again.Keep in mind, anyone who tests positive must always get retested until the result comes back negative before they can return to their daily normal lives. That means that there are thousands of people out there who are getting retested. And what happens when they come back with a positive result for the second or even third time?Yep, you guessed it. They get added into the “new” case count. So, you can see now how important it is to be given all of the information instead of just one number in a headline. And that’s what we’re here for.last_img read more

first_img“Whoever will try it (match-fixing) here at Homeboyz, he will be handed a life ban. I can’t speak on behalf of clubs that I don’t know, but in so many clubs in the Kenyan Premier League there is match fixing, but in our team, it had roots. Its only that other clubs fear speaking out,” Shimanyula underscored.Kakamega Homeboyz head coach Paul Nkata issues instructions on the touchline during their Kenyan Premier League match against Nakumatt FC at the Camp Toyoyo Ground on June 17, 2018. PHOTO/FILEThe Kakamega Homeboyz chairman revealed how his now sacked head coach Ugandan Paul Nkata allegedly collaborated with George Mandela to match fix some of their matches.“We have all the evidence and I wonder why the federation has not taken action on Nkata and Mandela, in Kenya there is a lot of Match fixing its only that people after fearing to speak, as Homeboyz we have strategy of catching them, match fixing is brought by greed.“So, the coach (Nkata) used to give players Sh150 ,000 or Sh50,000 and because the players earn less, they will take the money and do as they are instructed since he (coach) is their boss. I won’t blame players as much. The coach used to substitute Allan Wanga w to avoid scoring goals that could have led to him losing bet,” Shimanyula told.He added; “Federation has failed to take action on the matter because if in 2009 it happened as the FIFA report indicates, up to know what has the federation done?” Shimanyula questioned. This comes after a 10-page FIFA report linked three former Harambee Stars defenders with alleged match fixing in the 2009 Kenya v Nigeria FIFA 2010 South Africa World Cup qualifier in a match played at the Moi international Sports Center Kasarani. In the report, claims are the former defender George ‘Wise’ Owino was paid to let in goals in a match that Kenya ended up losing 3-2 to the Super Eagles and earn a slot in World Cup the following year.-KPL to call meeting over match-fixing claims-KPL CEO Jack Oguda. Photo/FILEThe development has prompted Kenya Premier League governing body to call an Executive Meeting with all stakeholders before the end of the week in a bid to establish the root cause of match-fixing scandal.Speaking to Citizen TV digital, KPL Chairman Ambrose Rachier said the allegations have caught them by surprise but they are acting swiftly in a bid to determine the extent of the vice and try to curb it.“We want to approve the appointment of an investigator to be able to come to the bottom of these allegations. Betting companies are sponsoring a number of teams in the whole world, so we will look for the best possible benchmarks that we have in other places and put those rules in place in our own country prevent this mischief from taking place in our own league,” Rachier said.Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier. Photo/FILEContrary to Shimanyula’s comments, KPL CEO Jack Oguda said that Kakamega Homeboyz are yet to share their evidence with league management body.“We have written to the club chairman asking him to present   us with the witness statement showing that there was match fixing so that we can take the matter to the Independent Disciplinary Committee.“Until now they say they are protecting the players but without evidence there is no way we can they proceed because as it is they are allegations so let them also move with speed,” Oguda told Citizen TV digital.0Shares0000(Visited 10 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula. first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), which represents about 20,000 dock workers at 29 West Coast ports, voted to begin talks on an extension of its contract with the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), which represents West Coast port facilities owners. The PMA and ILWU signed a five-year contract in early 2015 – retroactive to July 1, 2014 – after protracted labor talks and a nearly four-month work slowdown that negatively affected U.S. exporters. The U.S. meat and poultry sectors lost an estimated $40 million a week during the slowdown, which went from November 2014 to February 2015. NPPC and 112 other trade associations in March 2016 sent a letter to the ILWU and the PMA, urging them to begin early discussions on a contract extension or a new contract. The groups, representing manufacturers, farmers and agribusinesses, wholesalers, retailers, importers, exporters, distributors, transportation and logistics providers and other supply chain stakeholders, also suggested the two sides develop a new model, including early and continuous dialogue between the parties, for future negotiations and called on the union and the port association “to avoid actions that would slow, stop, or disrupt cargo movement during negotiations.”In a related matter, the International Longshoremen’s Association, representing East Coast and Gulf Coast dock workers, put a hold on its early contact talks with the United States Maritime Alliance. That contract expires in September 2018.last_img read more

first_imgKolkata: The work for vacating the articles stacked inside the affected shops at Bagree Market will begin from Tuesday. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting at the headquarters of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) that was chaired by Mayor Sovan Chatterjee. Senior officials of Kolkata Police, CESC, the traders’ association and other stakeholders were present.Experts from IIT Roorkee who have been roped in for recommending the fate of the market urged the state to make arrangements for vacating the affected portions at the earliest to rule out chances of caving-in. The market has been subjected to prolonged exposure to extreme heat as fire continued for many hours and hence, chances of the structure collapsing cannot be ruled out. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeA source in the KMC said that work for emptying the affected shops could have been done earlier but the affected traders, on compassionate grounds, were given a certain period of time during the festive season to concentrate on their business activities. “The space in the corridor and the staircase have already been vacated. But a number of shops still have articles crammed inside them. The job for emptying these shops will start from Tuesday and it will be carried out by the traders themselves. “Officials and vehicles from the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department will be present for disposing of the things that will be brought out by the traders,” a senior official of the KMC said. CESC will make arrangements for temporary electric connection to facilitate the traders and Burrabazar police station will deploy forces for smooth work. After the affected portion is completely vacated, the team from IIT Roorkee will survey it again in detail and accordingly make recommendations on its fate.last_img read more
