first_imgThe Oxford Internet Institute held a three-hour Wikipedia Editathon on January 15 to mark the free encyclopaedia’s 15th birthday. In particular, researchers set out to improve entries about the ‘The Social Internet’, which covers topics from Uber, electoral predictions and the digital divide to freedom of speech, emojis and data surveillance. The encyclopaedia is ranked among the ten most popular websites in the world and constitutes the internet’s largest and most popular general reference work. The latest in a series of fundraising campaigns to keep the website free began recently. Dr Martin Poulter, the Bodleian Libraries’ Wikimedian in Residence who led the Editathon told Cherwell, “The Oxford Internet Institute wanted to run an event in which researchers and students would improve Wikipedia, and I suggested it happen on Wikipedia’s birthday as it would make the ideal present for Wikipedia. “We had about 30 people turn up. There were presentations from six researchers about Wikipedia’s strengths and weaknesses: there are still big problems of inequality across countries and across languages. Then again, a lot of those inequalities are present – even worse – in the traditional scholarly literature. “Wikipedia and its sister projects (collectively called ‘Wikimedia’) are potential platforms for researchers, librarians and educators that improve the knowledge that’s freely and openly available on these sites, they can reach a huge audience and shape public understanding of their subjects. But there’s a cultural change needed (and gradually happening) to make these sites accepted as part of their work.” When describing his role at Bodleian libraries, Poulter added, “My job is to build those links. Working in the Bodleian, I can use its collections of cultural treasures from around the world, but I also get to run training events with the Oxford Internet Institute and other parts of the University. Some are open to students; keep an eye on the IT Services events list.”last_img read more

first_imgBy Stephen Diener                                                                                                                   July 12th, 2020If you’re only paying attention to the new daily case count of coronavirus positives, than you are sadly not getting the entire story. The headline that grabbed everyone’s attention earlier today reported a one day record of 15,300 new cases of Covid-19 in the state of Florida. And to make matters more panic inducing, that number was not only a state record, but it was a record high number for any state in the country since the pandemic began. But that was it, that’s where the story began and ended. The headline was fed to you and the fear set in.Is it unsettling to see over 15,000 new cases of coronavirus? Yes, of course it is. No matter how it’s spun, it’s still over 15,000 positives. But, the fact of the matter is, that number is only one piece of the pie and without the rest, you simply are not getting the whole picture. Here’s some of the very important information that most likely was not reported to you in the news. This is your warning, there’s about to be a lot of numbers thrown your way, but they are important numbers, so stick with me.For one, those 15,300 cases we spoke about earlier were indeed a new one day record, but what was not told to you in that salacious headline was that those positives resulted from the 142,981 tests done in one day. That was a new state record by almost 50,000 tests, beating the old record of 95,335 reported on July 9th.Think about that for a second, let’s round that number up to 143,000, and realize that when you do the math of 15,300 positive results, that nets you with an 11.25 positivity rate. And then realize that just so happens to be the lowest rate of positives in over two weeks. Also take into account something else that doesn’t get talked about in these scary headlines that they like to pass off as news. And that is the recovery rate.Yes, we have lost way too many to this hellacious virus, but the fact of the matter is the recovery rate is at least over 98%. That is not me trying to “down play the virus,’ that is a statistical fact. And lastly, one more thing to remember during these very uncertain times, the “new” cases that get reported everyday are not exactly new.It is a little known fact that when new cases are counted for the daily report, the results of those who have already received a prior positive test are added in to the new cases if they test positive once again.Keep in mind, anyone who tests positive must always get retested until the result comes back negative before they can return to their daily normal lives. That means that there are thousands of people out there who are getting retested. And what happens when they come back with a positive result for the second or even third time?Yep, you guessed it. They get added into the “new” case count. So, you can see now how important it is to be given all of the information instead of just one number in a headline. And that’s what we’re here for.last_img read more

first_imgBy John BurtonRED BANK — Expect discussions on the construction of a parking garage in downtown Red Bank to come up again at borough council meetings in the near future, says Mayor Pasquale Menna.Business owners and developers are already expressing interest in a parking garage after a lull brought on by a series of economically difficult years.Given that interest, Menna said, the time might be right to start talking about a public/private collaboration to fund the constsruction of a parking deck at the White Street municipal parking lot.“I think in the next few months there will be some action by the [borough] council on a number of comprehensive garage, parking/public use initiatives,” he said.Red Bank RiverCenter has been talking with “people who may be interested,” in pursuing this, the mayor said, but declined to name the interested parties.Any such partnership would include some stipulations, Menna said, including that the garage would be a revenue generator for the municipality; that resident taxpayers wouldn’t pay for the facility’s construction; and that, in addition to containing parking stalls, the garage would have some additional public use.“It’s got to be a creative use and we’re open to suggestions,” he said. One other condition, Menna attached: “It can’t be a big box with a housing element on top.”The shortfall in parking spaces has long been a problem for elected officials and local businesses and at times has become a heated political issue. More than a decade ago, then Mayor Edward J. McKenna Jr. and some of his Democratic borough council colleagues proposed bonding for $11 million dollars to construct a municipally owned and operated parking deck at the White Street lot. The downtown business alliance, Red Bank RiverCenter, strongly supported the project and McKenna argued that the garage would help not only the businesses, but the whole community.Republican candidates for municipal office waged a successful campaign encouraging residents to voice objections to their tax dollars being used for the project.Menna, a Democrat, at that time eventually said he would vote against it, and with the others opposed, the bond ordinance was withdrawn.Since then RiverCenter and members of the downtown business community have continued to advocate for a parking garage as a way of keeping commercial activity alive in Red Bank.New proposals have been discussed, including those that would contain retail or housing components; but none of them have moved beyond the discussion stage. Now, Menna believes, business and constsruction projects are moving forward again and the time has come to revisit the idea of a parking garage.“It’s very easy to put up a parking meter and collect a fee on the parking stall,” he said, explaining his reasoning. “But is that the most creative and the best use for the taxpayers who need relief?”Menna declined to be nailed down as to when these proposals would become public. But he did hint that there would be other significant news about forthcoming businesses. “And they will be extraordinary for the municipality, in terms of people who are going to move in to work in town,” he said.last_img read more

first_imgA remote Donegal island hotel that has attracted attention from buyers from across the globe after it was put on the market in recent weeks has had it asking price dropped by €25,000. It comes following the closing date for offers was on Saturday last. The famous 14 bedroom Óstan Thóraigh or Tory Island hotel had a price tag of just €400,000, around the price of a three-bed apartment or less than a three-bed semi in Dublin. However, despite interest from potential buyers who have visited the remote island,  nine miles off the Donegal coastline, including an American priest, a Belgium hotelier and a couple from Dublin, its owners have dropped the property’s asking price to €375,000.Last month, an estate agent has blamed Brexit, an increase in VAT rates and poor publicity for a failure to sell a unique island hotel off the coast of Donegal.Asking price falls for Tory Island hotel by €25,000 was last modified: September 2nd, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more
